The Aimex 20L Benchtop Water Purifier is a gravity water filter for Australian homes and offices that want better-tasting drinking water without plumbing, power or a bottled water service. Its 8 stage filter with KDF and activated carbon treats tap water as it flows into the 11 litre lower tank, and a Maifan stone is included.

What it filters
The activated carbon is designed to reduce chlorine taste and odour, and Aimex says the KDF media helps reduce some heavy metals. The Maifan stone in the lower tank adds trace minerals. These standard filters aren't designed for fluoride; for that, choose the Aimex 20L fluoride water filter dispenser.

Running costs and replacement filters
With one cartridge lasting up to 6 months, 3 filters cover up to 18 months and 4 filters up to 2 years. Replacement Aimex 8 stage filter cartridges cost $52 each or $146 for 4. The 4 filter option ($237) costs $31 less than the 1 filter purifier ($153) plus a 3 pack of cartridges ($115).
Setup and maintenance
- Soak the new filter and Maifan stone in water before first use.
- Fit the filter, dome and Maifan stone, then attach the tap.
- Fill the upper tank with tap water. Filtered water collects in the lower tank.
- Rinse the tanks regularly and keep the unit out of direct sunlight. Full steps are in the Aimex filter instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Will it fit on my bench?
Measure first: it's about 59 cm tall and 33 cm wide. Check the gap under your overhead cupboards. If space is tight, the 16L model is about 55 cm tall.
How quickly do I get filtered water?
About 30 minutes for a full tank. Fill the 9 litre top tank and it filters into the 11 litre bottom tank at about 0.3 litres a minute. Fill it before bed and wake up to fresh water.
What does it cost to run?
About 1 cent per litre. A $52 cartridge filters up to 5,000 litres. No power, no plumbing and no bottled water deliveries.
When do I change the filter?
Every 6 months or 5,000 litres, whichever comes first. Change it sooner if the taste changes or the water flows more slowly. Tip: set a phone reminder when you fit a new one.
Does it reduce fluoride?
No, this model is for taste and chlorine. For fluoride, choose the Aimex 20L fluoride dispenser. It's the same size with a fluoride-reduction cartridge.
Can I pour hot water in?
No, use cold tap water. Hot or boiling water can damage the filter. Fill it straight from the cold tap and keep the unit out of direct sunlight.
