Aimex Water Filter Instructions & Replacement Guide

Follow these steps to set up a new Aimex 16L or 20L benchtop water purifier, or to fit a replacement 8 stage filter. Most problems with new filters, such as slow filtration, side leaks or dark water, come from skipping the soak and rinse in step 1.

Eight illustrated steps showing filter preparation and water dispenser assembly.

1. Prepare your filter cartridge

  • Soak the new filter and felt pads in a bowl or bucket of cold water overnight (about 12 hours). This pushes out trapped air and activates the filter media.
  • Next day, rinse the filter under warm (not hot) running tap water for 5–10 minutes, until the water runs clear and no more black carbon dust comes out.
  • Never use boiling water or detergent on a filter. Both can damage it.

2. Set up the purifier (16L and 20L)

  • Wash the top and bottom tanks, lid and base in mild soapy water, then rinse thoroughly.
  • Fit the tap into the hole in the lower tank, with a silicone washer on both sides of the tank wall. Tighten the nut by hand.
  • Attach the prepared filter to the upper tank or joining ring (depending on your model). Make it firm, but don't over-tighten.
  • If your unit includes Maifan stones, rinse them under tap water and place them in the bottom of the lower tank.

3. First use

Fill the top chamber with tap water and let it filter through. Throw away the first full tank of filtered water to flush out any remaining fine particles.

4. When to replace your filter

Replace your 8 stage filter about every 6 months, or sooner if the flow slows right down or the taste changes. Aimex filters measure about 185 mm high and 90 mm wide. Shop 8 stage replacement filters, Algae Shield (white) filters or fluoride filter cartridges.

Troubleshooting

Filtration is very slow. The ceramic layer has very fine (5 micron) pores, and air trapped in a new filter slows the flow. Rinse the filter under warm (not hot or boiling) water. The flow speeds up gradually with use.

My new filter leaks from the side. This is usually air trapped in the new filter. Remove it and rinse it under warm running water for 10–15 minutes. Tapping it gently helps release air bubbles.

The water looks dark or black. This is fine carbon dust from the activated charcoal in a new filter. Rinse the filter thoroughly under warm running water until the water runs clear. A properly soaked and rinsed filter gives clear water.

Why does filtered water taste different? Filtering reduces chlorine and other elements that give tap water its taste and smell, and the mineral stage adds trace minerals back. Filtered water is usually slightly alkaline, around pH 7–8. It can take a little time to get used to the new taste.
